چکیده

Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) is commonly defined as a combination of obesity (body mass index (BMI) .30 kg?m), waking arterial hypercapnia (arterial carbon dioxide tension (Pa,CO2) .6.0 kPa (45 mmHg)) and sleepdisordered breathing. Essential to the diagnosis is exclusion of other causes of alveolar hypoventilation [1]. The lack of a standardised definition of OHS in general, and of OHS– obstructive sleep apnoea relationships in particular, leads to confusion.

Using PaCO2 values to grade obesity-hypoventilation syndrome severity: a retrospective study

BACKGROUND To date, an important aspect that has still not been clarified is the assessment of OHS severity. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate whether grading OHS severity according to PaCO2 values may be useful in order to provide a more definite characterization and targeted management of patients. In this regard, baseline anthropometric and sleep polygraphic characteris...

Pulmonary Diseases (Including Sleep Apnoea and Pickwickian Syndrome)

Obesity produces measurable reductions in pulmonary function and is strongly associated with breathing disorders in sleep, such as sleep apnoea and obesity—hypoventilation. Moderate to severe degrees of obesity can lead to a restrictive abnormality in lung function due to the mechanical effects of central body fat. Similar fat deposition is linked to upper airway collapsibility in sleep and rec...

The obesity hypoventilation syndrome.

We only need to look around us to see that we are in an epidemic of obesity and obesity-related medical problems. The obesity hypoventilation syndrome is a disorder in which an obese person with normal lungs chronically hypoventilates. Obesity impairs ventilatory mechanics, increases the work of breathing and carbon dioxide production, results in respiratory muscle dysfunction, and reduces vent...
